At least five civilians killed in Swat protest
* Protesters torch three banks in Mingora
MINGORA/PESHAWAR: At least five civilians were killed and many others injured in violent protest demonstrations in Mingora and other parts of Swat Valley on Tuesday, eyewitnesses said.
They said that hundreds of protesters came out to demand the establishment of peace, the withdrawal of troops and the restoration of electricity and gas supply.
Police and military contingents guarding important installations opened fire on the protesters, killing three of them.
According to AFP, the protesters were demonstrating against the alleged killing of children in a military operation.
A similar protest demonstration was held in Charbagh teshil, where residents from Dakorak, Allahabad, Zakota, Manglawar and other areas marched towards Mingora city.
They walked for 15 kilometres to reach Mingora, but were stopped by security forces at Fizza Ghat.
Banks: According to eyewitnesses, protesters set three banks in Mingora on fire and smashed the windowpanes of a fourth bank. APP said the mob torched branches of the National Bank of Pakistan, Khushali Bank, and Faysal Bank in Mingora.
The witnesses said at least three protesters were injured in firing by the security forces at Fizza Ghat checkpost. However, there was no official confirmation.
Meanwhile, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. Hoti issued a statement announcing compensation of Rs 100,000 for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
